How to make a granny square crochet wall hanging (2023)

Hey guys! It's the end of August - where does the time go? I just want to enjoy the sun and the heat as long as possible. To capture the summer, I designed the Soak Up the Sun crochet wall hanging as a transitional piece between the seasons. The cream and butterscotch color combination reminds me of a warm summer evening when the sun is setting and the leaves are starting to change color.

This crochet wall hanging uses large crochet stitches and super tall yarn so it's quick to make; it's also easy on the budget because it only uses 2 strands of yarn and a dowel! Let's dive into the tutorial for this project. You can find free patterns below.

Yarn choice and alternative yarn options

If you've been following my blog, you've probably noticed that I like to save as much money as possible; and this wall hanging is no exception. Whenever possible, I try to use up my yarn stash, so after finding a few skeins of Wool-Ease Thick and Quick in my yarn pile, I knew I had to use them for a little project.

Although I used Wool-Ease Thick and Quick to hang on the wall, you can use any extra heavy #6 yarn you have on hand. So dig into your stash and see what fun color combinations you can create!

Pattern measurements:

  • Pin: 32,5"
  • Wall Width: 28.5"
  • Wall Hanging Length: 10"

Settings:

The size of this wall covering is a little odd so I had to make a custom size to match. I found a 0.5" diameter 36" dowel at Michaels for $1.80 and cut 2.5" off the end with a handsaw. This left me with a 32.5" dowel which gave me an extra 2" on each side of the wall bracket.

Solution: If you don't have dowels or sticks on hand, I recommend going to Home Depot, Michaels, or ordering them online.pinReally cheap ($1.18 for a 36" pin). A 36" dowel can be cut into two pieces measuring 32.5" and 2.5". You can cut it yourself with a saw, or ask the staff at Home Depot to cut it for you. As long as you measure and mark the cut yourself, they are happy to help!

Block your crochet wall hanging (don't skip this step):

Blocking your work makes all the difference with this wall hanging because the square isn't perfectly straight. Blocking is done by wetting or steaming your crochet hooks so the stitches can relax, stretch and lie flat.

When should you block your work?

  1. Once you have crocheted the 3 squares for the wall, pin each square and sew them together.
  2. Once you have sewn and crocheted the border around the 3 squares, block the entire wall covering to ensure it lays flat. You'll thank yourself later!

What materials do you need?

Blocking your work doesn't have to be expensive; you can use what you have on hand. To prevent wall hanging, you must:

  1. straight needle(Can be found in the sewing section of any department store or dollar store)
  2. steamer/ironsteam settings (or oneSpray canyou can fill it with water)
  3. A piece of Styrofoam (havemåtte elChildren's blocksfrom the dollar store), a piece of wood, a piece of carpet or a used mattress - pretty much anything you can stick a needle in!

Pin and Steam - Method #1:Attach each square to a piece of Styrofoam using straight pins. Stretch and straighten your piece as much as possible before moving the steamer/iron over your piece. Make sure the steamer/iron is at least 2 inches away from your work. Pull your clothes, straighten them and let them dry. Once dry, remove the pins!

Needle and Spray - Method #2:If you don't have a steamer or iron, you can use a straight pin to straighten your creation and lightly spray it with water. Allow the piece to dry overnight or wait 24 hours before removing.

Sew the granny squares together:

To sew the squares together, we use a technique called whip stitch. If you're new to this stitch, Wool and the Gang has a great tutorial to help you outher.

  • Make sure your dice are facing up.
  • Using a whip stitch, sew the first and second squares together along the dotted lines shown above. Make sure to sew in every stitch and chain-2 space.
  • Repeat this process to connect the second and third squares along the dotted line shown in the image above.

limit:

to note: The picture below shows a border made around 2 squares; you need to work on the edge around 3 squares.

  • Make sure the right side of the granny square is facing you (not the back) with color B, 1 ch and sl st to secure any st start.
  • Sc is across the street from each. In square 2-ch sps, make a (ch, 1-ch, sc) in the same sp.
  • Repeat this process around the entire wall hanging.
  • Connect sl st. Tie and braid your ends!

Block your wall coverings again!

Yes, you are not wrong. Once you're done sewing the squares together and adding the border, it's time to block your final piece. Blocking your wall hanging will improve the drape, loosen the stitching and ensure it lays flat. Don't skip this step as it will make all the difference!

How to mount the wall bracket to the dowel:

Now that your crochet wall covering is blocked, it's time to attach it to the dowels.

  • Thread a yarn needle with a long tail (35") and insert the needle under the dowel needle in the first stitch.
  • Pull the yarn through the stitch and loop it around the pin.
  • Repeat this process in each stitch.
  • Tie a knot at the end of the wall covering and weave in the yarn ends.

  • To hang on the wall, attach a 38" piece of twine to each end of the dowel. Tie a knot in each end to secure the chain.

  • hint:If your wall covering does not sit perfectly flat on the wall, place a hidden thimble in the bottom corner and center space to hold it in place. No one will be able to see these pins (I promise!).
